User group and Secondary user groups

One common mistake newer admins make is not understanding how to properly set the "User group" and "Secondary user groups".

The most important thing is to understand is that ALL members MUST have the "User group" set to Registered.

Now if you want to make a user a moderator or administrator you do this:

Admin control panel -> Groups & permissions

Select either Moderators or Administrators

After you select "Add moderator" or "Add administrator" you can select the appropriate "Secondary user group" either Moderating or Administrative depending which type of user you're creating.

The easiest way to verify if you have the user_group set correctly for all users is to use phpMyAdmin. Bring up the xf_user table and check the user_group_d column:

Verify that every user_group_id field is set to 2. You can click the user_group_id text to reverse sort order to verify.
